USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT DRY CLEANING
|History says that "dry cleaning" got its name from the way that a Frenchman accidentally cleaned his clothes in the middle of 19th century. A quantity of gasoline from a broken lamp accidentally fell on his dirty clothes, and when he stretched them out to dry and aired from the smell of oil he discovered that they were dry and clean from stains.||
What is Dry Cleaning and how it’s done?
Dry cleaning of clothes is done using a liquid that evaporates too rapidly in a machine resembling a large washer. This liquid is called «PERC» or «PERCHLORE THYLANE» and it is a chemical made solvent such as alcohol or gasoline, but it is nonflammable. While the clothes are getting cleaned this fluid is continuously filtered by the filters of the machine. The clothes remain about 1 hour into the machine and come out completely dry and odorless.
How useful is dry cleaning for clothes?
In dry cleaning we clean clothing that we cannot wash with water like suits, jackets, dresses, coats, woolen sweaters, silk blouses, ties and other delicate clothes. Dry cleaning dissolves stains from oil, as well as the exhaust gas and dust from the environment, which constantly are absorbed by our clothes, even when they are in our closet.
How often a cloth should be cleaned and why?
Our clothes are our most "nearby" friends. A jacket or a coat is just an inch from our nose when we wear it. The clothes absorb dust and exhaust gas continuously, like a sponge absorbs water.
A freshly cleaned garment is more soft and fluffy than a garment that has been left for some time without cleaning. This difference is due to the dust and exhaust gas. An experienced hand can understand this difference. So, when wearing a garment which has not been cleaned, inevitably we have very close to our respiratory system, to our nose and mouth, a source of dust and exhaust gas.
A garment should be cleaned after 5-10 times we wear it or 1-2 times a year if it stays in the closet.
Most of our clothes are from natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool and silk, which wear much more quickly when the dust and exhaust gas remain for long time on the fibers of the fabric.
Think of the following:
How long can we let our hair unwashed?
Only a few days!
The same will happen also in our clothes!
Our hair and wool and silk fabrics have exactly the same nature.
Dry cleaning is safe even for the most delicate fibers and colors. It cleans instantly the most difficult stains (such as grease, wax, lipstick, oils).
There are three things that someone has to know about dry cleaning:
Methods of cleaning
There are two cleaning methods: dry cleaning and washing.
There are four categories, depending on their origin:
a. fabrics with fibers derived from plants
b. fabrics with fibers from animals
c. fabrics with fibers from chemical materials
d. mixed fabrics with fibers comprised by a combination of the above three categories
There are three types of stains:
a. those derived from plant substances
b. those derived from animal substances
c. greasy stains
…AND NOW THE TRUTH ABOUT DRY CLEANING
The truth is that the dry cleaning is not "dry", it is done using a liquid which is a chemical derivative, called "PERC".
The truth is that when you smell this fluid, it has a very strong smell and you will feel slightly dizzy.
The truth is that when used correctly it is 100% ecological, because it remains always in "closed circuit machines" which make cleaning, wringing and drying until complete deodorization.
The truth is that dust such as exhaust gas, continuously absorbed by our clothes and remains there unless you clean it with "some" ways. What might they be?
- Shaking and sun-dried
- Washing with water (in washing machine or by hand)
- Dry cleaning
There is no other way.
The truth is that research done by the University of North Carolina at GREENNSBORO and others made, show that frequent dry cleaning protects clothes and especially those from genuine natural fibers such as wool and silk, cotton and linen, because it cleans the exhaust gas and dust. Those remaining on the fiber along with the temperature developed by the sun or the radiator in the space, develop a slight toxicity and damage the fiber. Imagine your hair three months without being washed, under the sun and in the exhaust gas. What do you think is the difference between your woolen sweater? Nothing: It wears as well. But Perc has the best cleaning results and when used by professionals correctly it is harmless for all clothes and it’s ecological.
The truth is that you are very able people and whatever you have achieved you have achieved it based on your ability to distinguish good from bad, better from worse. So observe around you, in your neighborhood cleaner, a professional who works with it for years, is he ill or appears to be sick? - no, he is rather healthy and very cheerful.
The truth is that when a garment that we get from the dry cleaner still smells, simply it does not have lost its smell enough. It has just to be returned to lose the smell.
The truth is that you should trust the good and willing professionals, laundry machine owners and in case they are more expensive then it means that they are better, like so many other products around us.
The truth is that you were not looking for the cheapest doctor to get someone you love to. Why then taking your favorite outfit to the cheapest cleaning?
The truth is that a man's haircut takes 20 minutes and costs 15 € while a trousers costs half the money.
The truth is that together with PERC various other chemicals are used, "stain removers" or "spot removers", to remove stains locally. They are the known little bottles we see on the counter of the cleanser. They are produced in European countries or USA, which are much earlier sensitized by us is such matters and more strict, thus meet all legitimate requirements.
The truth is that in earlier times we all asked to get the best.
The truth is that we are now living in the era of the cheapest and not the best and unfortunately we have now begun to pay dearly.
The truth is that the writer works in the laundry continuously since the age of 15, has a height of 1.85 and weighs 90 kilos, and 30 years later -in his 45 he enjoys good health, although the machines 20 or 30 years ago were not as green as those currently operating in the company " MORAITIS SA – DRY CLEANING AND LAUNDRY " that is MODEL 2003.
